Introduction to Canyoneering West Maui $150.00 per person
Six hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. From our meeting spot in Kahului (Central Maui), ride with us a half hour to the northeast side of West Maui. We begin with a short hike through a dense bamboo forest to the top of a 50-foot cliff. Here we provide you with complete instructions and demonstrations. Then you rappel down an easy approach that becomes steeper as you descend until you're dropping straight down among big trees dripping with vines, mosses and dense vegetation. Climb back up along a steep trail as you pull yourself up using ropes fixed to trees for assistance to rappel off the cliff again. Then hike to the top of a 60-foot cliff for a guided rappel, during which you're hooked up to an overhead rope as well as having the rappel rope attached to your harness to control your descent. This time from a heart-stopping perch above the tree-tops, float through the canopy for 150 feet to the floor of the canyon. You control the speed of the rappel, and you're secured by our guide on the ground below you. (S)he can stop your descent at any point if you get into trouble and lower you gently to the ground, or our guide at the top can pull you back up, depending on the type of assistance you need. Then climb the ridge again for another rappel from above the trees. To continue the excitement, hike on down into the lower valley for a natural water slide into a pool, an optional jump off a 6-foot cliff into another pool, and a climb down a 15-foot cliff, while you hang onto the roots of a large banyan tree as you descend to the bottom of a 20-foot waterfall and a swim above a 35-foot waterfall. Lunch is served at one of the pools and waterfalls. The final hike back is along a good trail with some impressive views. The total hiking distance is about a mile with 700 feet of elevation change. Nearly anyone in reasonably good condition can participate in this trip. Those who want to come along and participate in all aspects of the tour, except the rappelling, may come along as observers for a discounted price of $100 plus tax. To make reservations, click here.
